Under WHS/OHS laws, the Person Conducting the Business or Undertaking (PCBU), usually the employer, must ensure anyone operating earthmoving equipment, and similar mobile plant, is competent to operate the equipment, has been trained in the operation of the specific machine, is provided with instructions, operator’s manual, safe work method statement and a hazard identification and risk assessment report.

Under the National Training Packages, there are Units of Competency for the operation of rollers and excavators and other earthmoving equipment:

RIIMPO317F Conduct Roller Operations

RIIMPO320F – Conduct civil construction excavator operations

Completion of training in a unit of competency is one way of demonstrating to an employer a worker is competent to operate the equipment.

If the worker has not been regularly operating the earthmoving equipment – rollers, excavators etc – and training was undertaken more than two years before, an employer should also consider requiring the worker to demonstrate they are currently competent to operate the equipment.

If a worker has experience operating earthmoving equipment, but has not done the relevant Unit of Competency, the employer should also consider assessing the competency of the worker before they start. This can be done through a Verification of Competency, which may be done by the employer or by a training provider.

The employer is then responsible for ensuring the worker is made familiar with the specific details of the make and model they are using, and trained in the SWMS, HIRAC and the Operator’s Manual.
All this information must be documented and records maintained showing the worker is competent to operate the specific machine.

The same WHS/OHS laws apply to owner-operators and self-employed contractors. You will need to be able to demonstrate you are competent to operate the earthmoving equipment.

If you are new to Conplant, and have not set up commercial trading terms, you will need to pay a deposit when you book your equipment. The deposit is equivalent to 1 day hire. In addition to the deposit, the full hire rate, all transport costs, and insurance must be paid prior to the equipment leaving our yard.

The daily hire rate is all inclusive for the piece(s) of equipment on hire. The daily rate allows for 8 hours of use within a 24-hour period. Please note: The day rate excludes GST, damage waiver and transportation costs.

Your privacy and the security of the information you provide is extremely important to us. Check out our privacy policy for full details.

As part of our policy, we believe you should only pay for equipment on a public holiday if you use it.

As soon as you’re finished with the equipment, or know that you’ll be finished, give us a call on 1300 166 166 and off hire your equipment to avoid any additional charges.

Yes, we have a number of transport options including large floats or smaller tilt trays for those harder to get to locations.

Yes, for your protection we ask that your transport provider complies with the Chain of Responsibility (CoR) obligations and NHVR laws and policies relevant to each state. We will provide a transport engagement order at the time of collection providing all weights and dimensions of the equipment has been collected. Click here for more information on CoR.

Yes, we encourage you to play your role in ensuring the risk of soil contamination remains low, in addition to eliminating the risks of debris falling off the roller during transport. If there is an excessive amount of dirt build up on your equipment we will charge a one off cleaning fee based on the amount of time taken to clean the equipment. If in doubt, simply send an image of your equipment to your local depot prior to collection.

You are not required to top your fuel up prior to the equipment being collected or returned if you do not have access to a refilling station. However, be mindful that, like all hire related industries, a top up fee will be incurred. Our current rate is $3.50/ L + GST (subject to change). This covers the cost of fuel, safe storage and the labour required to refuel the equipment.

The main region that Wacker Neuson equipment is manufactured in is Germany & Austria with some facilities also in the U.S.

Construction equipment is often painted yellow for several reasons. Firstly, yellow is a highly visible colour that stands out against most backgrounds, making it easier for workers and operators to spot the equipment on a busy construction site. This enhances safety and helps prevent accidents.

Yellow is also a colour associated with caution and warning, which is important in a high-risk environment like construction. Lastly, yellow is easily recognisable and identifiable as construction equipment, making it easier for workers to locate and identify the machinery they need. Conplant believes that colour choice in construction equipment is a practical and effective way to enhance safety and efficiency on construction sites. Our eye-catching yellow that adorns all of Conplant’s hire equipment comes down to a good eye, creativity and a dose of industrial chemistry!

Before we were established, Max Coleman (who would go on to become one of Conplant’s founders) was working for another equipment hire company. He found that the original colour of their machines blended into the background on site, and set about finding a more eye-catching solution to really stand out.

Max approached an old friend who was an industrial chemist, and asked for some brighter colour samples – one of which is the now-distinctive Conplant yellow.

The first pieces of equipment given a lick of Conplant yellow were a grader and a pick-up truck – however they were only Tonka-sized! One of our truck drivers gave the toys a paint job on a rainy day to test how the colour might look ‘on the job’. We still have them today as a reminder that even the biggest ideas start small.

A tender in construction refers to the process of inviting bids from contractors to complete a construction project.

It involves providing detailed project specifications and requirements to potential contractors, who then submit their proposals and pricing for consideration. The purpose of a tender is to select the most suitable contractor based on their qualifications, experience, and pricing.

Preliminaries in construction refer to the initial tasks and activities that need to be completed before the actual construction work can begin. These include site preparation, obtaining necessary permits and approvals, conducting surveys, and setting up temporary facilities. Preliminaries are crucial for ensuring a smooth and efficient construction process.

When we’re talking filters, the micron rating refers to the distance between pieces of filter media. This determines the size of particles that the filter will allow to pass through. For example, a 30 micron rated filter will allow larger particles to pass through than a 3 micron rated filter.

Compaction

Amplitude is the distance between the up and down or top and bottom position of the drum per hit. Higher amplitudes are recommended for the compaction of non-cohesive material, whereas lower amplitudes are suggested for the compaction of semi-cohesive and cohesive materials. For example, for the compaction of soil an amplitude range between 2.5 (rockfill) and 0.8 (clay) mm is recommended, and for asphalt compaction it is suggested the amplitude be between 0.25- 0.8 mm.

Frequency is the parameter which describes the numbers of hits of the drum onto the surface of the material being compacted per second. The optimal frequency is different for each material. For soil the compaction frequency is a range between 20 Hertz (rockfill) and 45 Hertz (clay). For asphalt compaction it is 35- 55 Hertz.

Tandem rollers, also known as a double drum roller, have two smooth steel drums. One smooth drum on the front of the roller and another one on the rear. The steel wheels on the tandem rollers provide the smoothest finish of all compaction equipment and, when operated in the vibratory mode, also provide substantial compactive effort.

Smooth drum rollers are predominately used on coarse aggregate, granular, non-cohesive and semi-cohesive material used in earthworks and road construction/rehabilitation.

Padfoot rollers are predominately used on cohesive and semi-cohesive materials used in earthworks and road construction/rehabilitation. Some of the more compact models are equipped with levelling blades.

Combination rollers have a combination of a single vibrating smooth drum on the front of the machine and tyres, in pneumatic tyre configuration, on the rear. As a result, combination rollers deliver the benefits of both a smooth drum and a pneumatic-tyred roller in one efficient machine. They are primarily used on road maintenance and patching applications.

A multi-tyre roller is a type of compaction roller that uses air filled tyres to compact the underlying area. Multi-tyre rollers, also known as pneumatic tyre rollers (PTR), use a set of smooth tyres (without tread) on both the front and the rear axles. The tyres on the front axle are arranged offset to the rear, to eliminate gaps between tyres to give complete and uniform compaction coverage over the compactive rolling width. The rubber tyres of the multi-tyre roller conform to the surface being compacted, eliminating the voids of air and space, making the compacted surface denser.

Trench rollers are remote controlled and are usually used in a trench compaction environment. They can also be used for general small scale cohesive/semi-cohesive compaction.

We offer units with a range of heaped capacities between 3,200L and 4,400L.

Excavators

A mini excavator, also known as a compact excavator or mini digger, is a small construction machine designed for performing various excavation tasks. It is smaller in size compared to standard excavators and is typically used for projects that require precision and manoeuvrability in tight spaces.

A mini excavator works by using hydraulic power to operate its arm, bucket, and other attachments. The operator controls the machine from a cab, using joysticks and pedals to move the excavator and its attachments. The hydraulic system allows for precise movements and efficient digging, making it suitable for a wide range of construction and landscaping tasks.

Mini excavators come in various sizes and configurations to suit different job requirements. The most common types include zero-tail-swing excavators, compact mini excavators, and wheeled mini excavators. Each type has its own advantages and is suitable for specific applications.

Choosing the right size mini excavator depends on the nature and scale of your project. Factors to consider include:

  • Frame size
  • Operating weight
  • Maximum digging depth.
  • Maximum dump height
  • Bucket breakout force
  • Tail swing.
  • Project worksite – space and operating requirements
  • Attachments required

We strongly recommend contacting our team before making your final decision.
